I Just Started a Podcast. What Now?
First of all… congratulations. You did the thing. You stopped talking about starting a podcast, and you actually started one. You recorded. You uploaded. You also probably refreshed your stats 47 times in the first hour. Now you’re sitting there thinking: "What now?"
Take a breath. This is the part nobody glamorises on Instagram. The launch high is over. The mic is still warm. And now you have to build something.
Here’s what actually comes next.
1. Relax. You’re Early.
The first thing you need to understand about starting a podcast is this: it is supposed to feel small at the beginning. Single-digit downloads are completely normal. Friends pretending they “haven’t had time to listen yet”? Also normal. You questioning whether you sound weird? Extremely normal... and this one will happen more times than you think. It doesn't matter, keep going.
Most podcasts don’t blow up in week one. Or week twelve. Podcast growth is slow because it’s trust-based. People need to discover you, test you, and decide they like you enough to come back. So before you panic, remind yourself Rome Lagos wasn't built in a day.
2. Tighten Your Positioning (Yes, Already)
Now that you’ve launched, it’s time to get clear. Can someone describe your podcast in one sentence? Not a paragraph. Not “it’s kind of about life and stuff.” One sentence. Ask yourself: Who is it for? Why should someone listen? What will they get out of it?
People are overwhelmed with content. If your podcast feels vague, they’ll move on in seconds. Clarity is kindness. It tells people exactly where you fit into their lives. If your podcast title, description, or episode names feel confusing, tweak them. Early-stage podcasts are allowed to evolve. Actually, they’re supposed to.
3. Pick a Schedule You Can Survive
Here’s where new podcasters sabotage themselves: unrealistic publishing schedules. You do not need to post everyday. You do not need to compete with full-time creators who have teams. You need consistency.
Weekly works for many people. Bi-weekly works beautifully. Seasonal works too. The key is predictability. If you say you publish every Thursday, publish every Thursday. Reliability builds trust. Trust builds listeners. Listeners build growth.
And please, don’t burn yourself out in month two because you thought hustle equals success. Sustainable podcasting wins every time.
4. Start Talking About It (Even If It Feels Cringe)
This is the part everyone avoids. Promotion. You cannot “just let it grow organically” if no one knows it exists. Post clips. Share quotes. Talk about it in your Stories. Mention it in real-life conversations. Pull 30-second moments from your episodes. A funny line. A hot take. A vulnerable moment. Add captions and post them to Instagram Reels, TikTok, or YouTube Shorts.
Social media isn’t the destination. It’s the doorway. Your job is to give people a reason to step through it.
5. Listen to Your Own Show (Yes, Seriously)
After a few episodes, go back and listen like you’re not the host. Where do you ramble? Where does the energy dip? Where does it shine? Your early episodes are data. They’re not permanent monuments. You’re allowed to get better. In fact, you should.
Growth is attractive.
6. Engage the Audience You Have
If three people message you about your episode, reply. If someone leaves a comment, respond. If someone shares your show, thank them. Your first listeners are not “small.” They’re foundational.
Community starts early. Loyalty starts early. The way you treat your first ten listeners is the culture you’re building long-term. And trust me, one loyal listener who tells five friends is worth more than 100 passive downloads.
7. Adjust Your Expectations
Podcasting is not instant gratification. It’s not a viral tweet. It’s not a trending sound. It’s long-form trust. You are building a body of work. An archive. A voice. That takes time.
Instead of obsessing over download numbers, focus on improvement. Is each episode clearer? Stronger? More confident? That’s incredible growth.
So the Real Answer to “What Now?” is you keep going. You refine. You experiment. You promote. You show up again next week. And the week after that.
You don’t quit because it’s quiet. You don’t spiral because it’s slow. You remember that every podcast you admire once had zero listeners too. You started a podcast. That already puts you ahead of the “I’m thinking about it” crowd.
Now the only thing left to do is build it. And yes, refresh your stats if you must. Just don’t let them decide your worth.
