Serious About Podcast Growth? You Need KPIs.
At work, we set goals and KPIs. At the gym, we set goals too, like 75 Hard (then tap out by day 5, oops). But even when we fall short, the intention is there. We want to improve. We want to grow. And on this wild podcasting journey, setting goals, aka KPIs, is just as important. Because let’s be honest: one week your episode gets a spike in plays, the next week… crickets. And you’re stuck wondering, “Am I actually getting better at this, or just going in circles?”
That’s where podcast KPIs come in. And no, this isn’t just some corporate jargon. It’s your way of taking control of your progress, measuring what matters, and making your podcast work for you, not just the algorithm.
KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are like little checkpoints that help you see how you're doing. Are people listening longer? Are more people clicking the link in your bio? Are guests starting to share your episodes without you even asking? These are all signs you’re onto something. And without tracking them, you're basically flying blind. Podcasting becomes this endless loop of publish–promote–pray. But with even just 2 or 3 KPIs in your back pocket, you can start seeing the patterns. You can tweak what’s not working and double down on what is.
Downloads are cute, but they’re only one piece of the puzzle. Here are a few other KPIs you might want to track depending on your goals:
- Listener Retention: Are people actually staying until the end of your episode, or dipping out at minute 3?
- Unique Listeners: Is your audience base growing over time?
- Click-throughs: Are people checking out your website, show notes, or lead magnets?
- Social Engagement: Are people sharing your content or commenting with “omg I needed this!”?
- Guest Referrals: If someone says, “I found you through so-and-so’s episode” - that’s gold. You don’t need all of these. Just pick the ones that match your intention.
This is where it gets personal. Start by asking: Why did I start this podcast? Maybe it’s to grow your brand, land more clients, build a community, or just express yourself creatively. Get clear on your why. What does success actually look like? Is it 10K downloads? Or 10 heartfelt DMs? Is it consistent publishing for 6 months? Define it. Success looks different for everyone. What are 2 or 3 things I can measure? Start small. Example: “I want 100 newsletter sign-ups from my podcast listeners in the next 3 months.” Boom! That’s a goal with a KPI. How often will I check in? Set a time, maybe once a month, to review your KPIs. What went well? What flopped? What can you tweak?
And here’s the thing, your KPIs don’t need to be based on big, flashy numbers. One of the most powerful ways to track growth is by looking at your stats in percentages, not totals. For example: instead of saying “I want 1,000 more listeners,” say “I want to grow my audience by 10% month over month.” It doesn’t matter if you’re starting with 100 or 10,000 listeners - the goal is based on your numbers, not someone else’s highlight reel. This makes growth feel more personal, more realistic, and way more motivating. Because now, you’re measuring your own progress, not chasing someone else’s finish line
Your KPIs can evolve. In season one, your goal might be to just stay consistent and not ghost your show after episode three. Later on, it might be landing paid brand deals or growing your Patreon. It’s all valid. You’re allowed to shift your metrics as your podcast (and your life) grows.
And don’t let KPIs become pressure. Let them be power. This isn’t about hustle-harder energy. It’s about podcasting with intention and clarity. You deserve that. Podcasting is hard work. But it’s also something you’re building from scratch - with your voice, your mind, and your mic. That’s powerful. And when you track it right, you’ll start seeing growth you can feel.
So go ahead. Define your success. Set your KPIs. And keep showing up, even when the numbers feel quiet. You never know who’s listening or what opportunities you’re preparing for.
