How long would you hold onto a dream? How long would you be willing to work on it? Chase it down until you see it realised? For Rodney Omeokachie, the answer is clear: two years. Two years of unwavering dedication and meticulous attention to detail to turn his silent disco-inspired experience into a historic podcast listening party.
Rodney, the founder of The Young god podcast, exudes a captivating presence that immediately draws you in. From his smooth voice to his cool, calm demeanour combined with an infectious confidence in himself; if you didn’t already know him, you’d certainly want to find out more.
Earlier this year, Rodney launched a groundbreaking audio rendezvous in Abuja, Nigeria, at the French Institute — a listening party like no other. Imagine 90 attendees donning glow-in-the-dark Bluetooth headphones, completely immersed in a revolutionary audio experience.
"I'm looking at the audience and I see them smiling, laughing, nodding their heads. I think to myself, 'Yes, that is it'," Rodney proudly shared.
During our exclusive cover story interview for The Podcast Sessions, his excitement was palpable as he spoke about his dreams of hosting similar listening parties across the continent and even setting a world record. "It's the first of its kind in the world. I did my research [because] I wanted to see how others have done it to see if I could steal something, and I could not find any Bluetooth-inspired listening events. So if Guinness is giving out records...," he playfully mused. But then he had an epiphany.
"Yo, hold that thought. Hold that thought. What would it look like to hold the Guinness World Record for the largest podcast-listening party with Bluetooth headphones?" The look on Rodney's face spoke volumes, brimming with the boundless possibilities that lay before him.
To be honest, it would come as no surprise if, as you're reading this, Rodney is already in contact with Guinness, aiming to turn his dream into a record-breaking reality. Adding to the many firsts witnessed on the continent — from podcast awards to festivals —this would be yet another groundbreaking achievement that we eagerly anticipate.
Rodney's podcasting journey began in 2018 when he launched The Creative Habit. The platform was initially created to promote his business, Avo Creative. However, he soon realised that his interests extended beyond the realms of business. This realisation marked the birth of The Young God, which quickly became an internationally acclaimed podcast that pushes boundaries and challenges conventional thinking.
The Young God is anything but ordinary. It offers a fully immersive creative experience, featuring thought-provoking interviews, captivating monologues, layered audio production, and mesmerising designs. Inspired by the critically acclaimed podcast Have You Heard George's Podcast? by George Mpanga (known as George the Poet), Rodney's approach to podcasting transcends convention. He understands the need to create a 360-degree concept that captures the attention of even non-podcast listeners.
"I figured if I'm going to do this, I have to go above and beyond to capture curiosity, imagination, and the true potential of audio to hold someone's attention," Rodney explained.
An advocate for audio-first experiences, Rodney firmly believes that there is a time and place for video, but it should not overshadow the essence of a podcast. "Video podcasts are redundant. It's not the mic and the screen that make a podcast. It's the fact that you're writing and editing for the ear that makes it a podcast." His conviction in the power of auditory experiences sets him apart in an era dominated by visual content.
"I am an army of one. I handle everything." From content creation to production, Rodney's meticulous attention to detail and creative vision drive the success of his podcast. For him, certain aspects cannot be outsourced; they require his personal touch to maintain the podcast's unique style and essence.
Rodney's enthusiasm for the podcasting industry in Africa is infectious. "We are building this industry from the ground up across the continent," he proudly shares.
As he continues to push boundaries and inspire others, the world eagerly awaits his next move. The silent disco-inspired listening party was just the beginning of his sonic revolution, destined to reshape the soundscape of the continent. The future of listening parties and the possibilities they hold are limitless in the hands of this visionary podcasting pioneer.
